Time To GET GREEN
Did You Know...
By the age of 6 months, the average North American has consumed the same amount of resources as the average person in the developing country consumes in a lifetime. Every day the US alone produces 404,271 tones of garbage, almost 5 pounds per person. The saddest part about this is nearly 1/3 of this “garbage” is recyclable and another 1/3 of it compostable. Higher amounts of waste also mean higher methane emissions. Landfills are the largest human-related source of methane in the U.S., accounting for 34 percent of all methane emissions. The methane produced by landfills is a major greenhouse gas 20 to 30 times more potent in its greenhouse effects than CO2. Producing materials from recycled products does not reduce the quality but has been proven to save energy, use less valuable resources, involve less chemicals and reduce pollution. Looking at this growing problem optimistically, the world has major potential to reduce the amount of waste being produced. Every ton of recycled material saves 2.5 cubic yards of landfill space!
What To Do?
Buy foods in bulk and look for products with minimum packaging. Investing in a few containers can save the need for individual packaging.
